A K I L A ; ;
Feathered, white hooves hit the ground gently as Akila trotted through the dark woods. The place didn't scare the Gypsy Vanner, sure, she didn't find it particularly comforting here, but it didn't scare her. The darkness and eeriness of the trees didn't hit her very hard, she just simply ignored it, and walked on.
Now, the mare didn't know exactly why she was here. She just was. It was the result of a lot of walking, that was all, it had no purpose, except the hope of meeting some other horses. From all her time on this Island, other than her mother, Akila had not met many other living creatures. Well, not horses anyway, she had seen plenty of other wildlife, mostly mice, but still, no horses.
The tired Fae trotted on at a steady place, her head low and her eyes lids threatening to fall. She really did need to find somewhere more ... friendly feeling to stay, somewhere that wasn't so sheltered over and covered. A spot that was brighter and fresher. That was what she wanted, although she was struggling to find it. "Stupid dark woods." She muttered to herself darkly, almost tripping on a large rock that was jutting strangely out of the ground.
It was then she heard it. Someone was here, in the woods. Who ever it was sounded heavier than any of the small creatures that roamed around like they owned the place. Next came the scent. It was another horse! Instantly Akila became weary. She may have wanted to meet another horse, but now that it came to it, it could be dangerous. She had no idea who this newcomer was, whether they were friendly or not, whether they were a threat. The Mare lowered her head more, eyeing the trees that surrounded her. Trying to show that she was no threat.
OOC ;; Sorry, i'm no good at starting threads off. ^_^

IF there was one word to describe the creature that a certain spotty Appaloosa had just met, it would be Peculiar. It had indeed been peculiar, but it was also sore. She had often heard the phrase 'curiosity killed the cat' from older horses she had met while travelling, but she had always thought it just a bit silly really. She wasn't a cat, so what harm could come from being curious? Of all creatures, though, she should know this the most, her mother was killed because of her adventurous attitude. But this was a strange horse, one who found it increasingly difficult to blame her curiosity for any misfortunes that may or may not befall her. Still, she began to understand the phrase a little more after her incident with the strange prickly creature. Maybe it doesn't mean just cats, but it still was a strange saying.
So, here she was, walking along, snorting and shaking her head back and forward. These things just wouldn't come off! Crossing her eyes, she got a better look at the three, long spines sticking out of her nose. How was she ever going to get these out? And they hurt so much. Sighing, she made a mental note: Never EVER get too close to one of them prickly creatures. She had learned this the hard way.
Thinking back, she guessed that she should have paid more attention to the warning signs. It did grunt at her and stamp its foot, and it made a strange rattling noise with the quills on it's back. But how was she to know that it would run at her? She only wanted to play. Still, this was her life story, sticking her nose where it wasn't wanted. At least the shade of the trees made her feel a bit better. The air was cooler under the trees and there was plenty of grass to eat. Lowering her head, Seiren picked up a large clump of grass in her mouth and chewed thoughtfully. If she was going to get these things out of her nose, she was going to have to think.
A soft thud nearby distracted her from her somewhat erratic thoughts. Her heart began to beat faster and she pricked her ears up, listening intently. Another thud, and another. Footsteps? But it was something larger than the small creatures she had met. Was it....another horse? Tentatively, she moved forward, pushing her way through the undergrowth. Looking all around for the direction the sound came from, she wasn't paying attention to where she was going and.....THUD.
Laying on the ground with her leags spread out at her sides, Seiren looked behind her. Great. A rock. Shaking her head of thoughts like, 'Who puts a rock in the forest!?' Seiren slowly, if not a little awkwardly, got to her feet only to come nose to tail with another horse. Whinnying in shock, she jumped backwards and timidly lowered her ears against her head. "Um....hello?" she asked, rather than said, quite nervously.

A K I L A ; ; Trotting cautiously through the trees, eyes darting at the first small sign of movement still, the Gypsy Vanner was getting nervous. All the possibilities were racing to her head. Nasty Brutes ... Predators ... dangerous horses. More and more she was wanting to turn back and run for it, but she couldn't, her legs wouldn't let her. She knew that the most dominant part of her body wanted to know who this newcomer was, and it was only the smaller side of her that wanted to run.
Deciding to be brave, she walked on, raising her head a little, to show, if it was a predator, that she would defend herself. A loud "thud" made her stop in her tracks, and now her heart raced, more than ever she wanted to run. All of her body was frizen. The sound had come from directly behind her. Realy close by. As if it was just behind her. Akila flicked her ears, trying to catch any sounds that would give the newcomer away. There it was. She could hear rustling. But not the kind you hear when someone is hiding in the bushes, it was more as if someone was struggling to get up off the floor.
The mare twisted her head around to look behind her, but saw no one. Funny ... she was sure she had heard something.
'Um ... hello?' The words made her jump, and she twisted her body around completely, straining to see. Her heart and body relaxed when she saw who it was. Another horse was stood behind her. She was smaller than herself, by quite a bit, and Akila wasn't the tallest of horses either. "hi!" She said excitedly, grinning at the new horse. It was then she notised the small spikes, sticking out of the Mares nose.
Akila cocked her head to the side, examining them for a moment, trying to work out if they were there on purpose or not. Finally, deciding they weren't suppost to be there, she spoke. "Is your nose Ok?" Her voice was soft, it always had been, gentle and caring was what her mother used to say, before the insident.

, Athanaric stepped quietly through the woods, not wanting to disturb the silence that seemed to envelope him. He held his head proudly as he looked around himself in a curious manner. Tree, tree, tree, bush, tree, tree, bush, tree... The stallion reared up and craned his head upward, looking at the canopy above him. He snorted happily as he felt the warm sun streaming through, onto his face. Landing with a light thud, Athanaric shook his mane contentedly and nickered softly to himself as he trotted onward, keeping a rhythmic pace as he wandered about Sorrow Woods. Ah, this is a nice place. He thought, nodding to himself a bit. Perhaps I can stay here. Start a herd of my own. That is what my father would want me to do, yes? Better yet, that is what I want to to. Athanaric was a natural leader- he was born that way, and was thus instinctively driven to find others to lead. The obvious way to do that was to start a herd. He loved the deep feeling of satisfaction he got after each successful day of keeping his herd safe, and of enticing mares to join him. It made him feel all warm and fuzzy inside! For now, that was what he lived for. Perhaps, later, his dreams would changed...
Athanaric's ears flicked as he heard something that pulled him out of his thoughts- voices... there were other horses here? For some reason he hadn't expected there to be anyone in these woods except for him. Stopping, he raised his head, stretched out his neck, and sniffed, his upper lip curling as he tried to catch the scent of whoever else was in these woods with him, but it was of no avail. There wasn't any favorable breeze to waft their scent in his direction. He snorted and stamped his foot. He wasn't about to let any other stallion take his land; but if luck was on his side, the horses would be mares, or foals, instead of stallions. Perhaps some other equines that would be interested in joining him. The thought made him excited, and so he began trotting again, in the general direction of where the sound had come from.
Suddenly, Athanaric caught site of one of the horses- and it was a mare! He stopped trotting and examined her. She was a black and white horse, a bit smaller than he was. The stallion nickered a happy greeting, and tried to show that he wasn't a hostile horse. Then he realized that he had heard two different voices- where was the other horse? He glanced around, and spotted the other horse out of the corner of his eye. Looking downward, he saw another horse- again, black and white, but this one was mostly white and had spots that were black. Why was she sprawled out on the ground? And why did she have those strange stick-like things protruding from her muzzle? After a moment of staring, Athanaric shook his head and introduced himself. "I am Athanaric." He stated strongly. ` Athanaric

A K I L A ; ; Why was this happening? Was she going mad? Other horses don't see the reflection of their dead mother when they look into the waters, so why did she? did she have something wrong with her? Again, she was sat by the side of the same small watering hole. staring down at her reflection. It was beginning to freak the small Mare out, she didn't wish to see her mother, not after all that had happened.
She rememberd sitting at the spot where her mother had said her last words. for ages and ages she had sat there, awaiting her return. Only after a long time did it finally snk in that her Dam was not returning, and would never return. akila had spent most of her Foal hood mopeing around after that. Not seeing any point to life, with her Mother gone. She would always see her reflection in the water, and it was something she did not want to see. It just reminded her of her past.
'I'm Athanaric.' The voice snapped her out of her memories, after once again, the silence had lead her back to her sad past. She turned to see the newcomer. It was a Stallion, taller and larger than herself, which made him seem slightly menacing to Akila, even if he did not wish to be. He stood proudly, which made akila guess that these were his lands that she was tresspassing on. The Mare sent a glance at the other Mare, who was even smaller than herself, and looked tiny against this Stallion.
Akila took an uncertain step back, but tried not to show in her body language that she was worried. She was never comfortable when meeting new people, especialy large Stallions like this new horse. She must admit to herself though, he was a quite a Hansom Brute. His coat an odd but beautiful colour. The Mare smiled at him, and bowed her head in a respectful way. afterall, if these were his lands, then she didn't want to get on his bad side, that could be dangerous. Giving his size and all. "I'm Akila, nice to meet you." She said lightly, trying to remember to be respectful.
Her mind travelled back to the last time she had met a Stallion this big. It had been in her homelands, or what are now the burnings. He had tried to force her into breeding, which was what she had wanted the leaste at that time, to be carrying a foal. Akilas opinions may have changed now, and it wouldn't bother her too much, but back then, being as young as she was, carrying and nursing young was the last thing on her list. The Brute had been massive, and had almost broken one of her back legs in the process. But akila, thankfully, had managed to get away. She was a good runner, the kind of horse she was had been made for it. Running, and jumping. That what the humans had bread them for. Entertainment, mostly. She did not want to go through that experiance again.
Sorry, i'm just rambling in this one, muse has gone walk abouts.

, Athanaric watched the first mare's reaction very closely. She must have either been hard of hearing, or lost in thought, because even though he had made no attempt to be quiet while venturing through the forest, she didn't notice him until he spoke. Then, the mare had taken a step backwards, which indicated that he had either startled her, or he made her nervous. The way she glanced at the other mare made him think that his second theory was correct- he made her nervous. I wonder why. Athanaric thought, curious. Whatever it was, she seemed to put the uncertainty aside as she smiled, bowed her head, and introduced herself. Athanaric liked this- it had been a while since he had been around other horses, and a reaction like this promised that it would probably be a good experience to become social again. `I'm Akila, nice to meet you.'Athanaric nodded in agreement and greeting, his dark brown eyes sparkling in excitement. "It is nice to meet you, too, Akila." He replied happily, flicking his tail and shaking his head lightly as he tried to think of something to say. After a moment or two of silence, he spoke again. "What brings you to this land, Akila?" He inquired politely. I don't want to refer to it as 'my land'... at least not yet. Besides, in this situation I don't think it would be too polite. Athanaric thought. Then he realized that the other mare still hadn't responded. He glanced down at her, once again his gaze was attracted to her nose. He studied it for a moment, and then returned his attention to Akila, waiting for her response to his question. ` Athanaric

Seiren, who had moved behind the other mare slightly when the stallion had arrived, stepped out a bit from the other mare. She had just been about to answer the mare when the stallion had come bursting through the bushes. He had scared her a bit and she had jumped a little, but now she was just curious, as she always was. She took in the form of the stallion with wide eyes, noting the muscles which seemed to bulge out through his coat. He did look really strong....and much bigger than she was, but she was starting to get just a bit annoyed. Her nose was really starting to hurt now, almost making her eyes water, but when she caught a glance of the mare looking at her nose, she stuck her head in the air.
She watched the two for a moment, feeling just a bit left out. No one had asked who she was. Deciding to act before her nose fell off, Seiren stepped forward and stood between the two other horses. "I'm Seiren." she said quietly, legs shaking from nervousness. She gazed up at the stallion again with awe, she had never seen a stallion this close up before. Shaking her head, she looked at both the horses again and lowered her head. "Look, it's nice to meet both of you, but my nose is really sore." she started nervously, a slight tremble in her voice. "C-could you help get these....things out?" Standing between the two with her head lowered, ears back and eyes looking up pitifully, switching between the two horses, Seiren tried to make herself as small as possible. This was embarrassing.

, Athanaric turned to Seiren as she finally began to speak. He nodded respectfully as she introduced herself, and was about to reply, when she kept talking. "Eh, sure, I'll help." He said, sounding a bit unsure. Hmm, how to help... I suppose I could grip them with my teeth and try to pull them out. That might hurt, but that's the only solution that I can see. He thought as he studied the strange sticks protruding from the mare's muzzle. "Hmm." He mumbled, narrowing his eyes at the sticks, as if he could just... somehow... will them to come out of her nose.
"...I suppose I could take them out with my teeth." Athanaric said awkwardly, shifting his weight from one side to the other. "That might hurt a bit, though." He added. He studied the stick-like things for a few moments more, before asking, "Should I try?" He glanced from Seiren to Akila, wondering if they had any better ideas or if they thought that his idea was a good one. Or maybe, Akila would have a motherly disposition and take over. I don't really know much about them or their personalities, so I can't guess their reactions... He thought as he watched them and waited for a response. ` Athanaric

A K I L A ; ; As the Gypsy Vanner glanced around the small clearing at the two horses that were here with her, she heard Athanaric answer her, and then ask her a question. 'what brings you to this land, Akila?' These words confused her a little, before, she was pretty sure, by the way he walked, and held his posture, that these were his lands, he was the stallion they belonged too, but now, she wasn't so sure. He would have called them 'his' lands, right, not 'these lands'? Anyway, that wasn't overly imposrtant at the moment, however, she was careful with what she said. "I was just passing through, making my way to my homelands." This was a sort of, half lie, she was passing through, but not to her homelands. She was merely wandering around.
At this moment, the other Mare stepped forward. Akila had almost forgotten she was there, she had been so quiet. As she walked forward, the Mare could see she still had the strange sticks producing from her nose. they must be quite painful. 'I'm Seiren' The Appaloosa sounded nervous, but akila couldn't blame her. the Stallion was huge compared to her.
'Look, it's nice to meet both of you, but my nose is really sore' It sure did look sore. So the sticks definatly weren't suppost to be there. How on earth had they managed it then? 'C-could you help get these....things out?' akila glanced at Athanaric, unsure about how to go about it. He seemed to know however, because he said he would. He had the idea of pulling them out with his teeth. Ouch. akila winced at the thought, that was going to be realy painful. she wasn't good with pain, although she could handle it well herself, seeing others get hurt wasn't one of her strong points.
'Should i try?' The stallion was looking at her, apparently wondering if she had any other ideas. Akila nodded uncertainly, sure, it would get them out, hopefully, but it was going to hurt Seiren. "Its the only thing i can think of." She said lightly.

"On your way to your homelands? I see. Where do you live?" Athanaric asked Akila curiously. He was a bit disappointed that she already had a herd and a homeland, but he didn't let it show. Instead, he decided to simply make conversation. There's no harm in making friends in other lands. He thought, nodding slightly. "If you don't mind my asking, that is. I don't mean to pry." He added after a moment. Athanaric then returned his gaze to Seiren's muzzle. He furrowed his brow as he examined the stick-things, and then he looked up at Seiren's face as he spoke to her. "Shall I try?" He asked, not wanting to attempt to pluck them out without her permission. He still felt awkward about this situation, but he tried not to let it show. Athanaric

A K I L A ; ; 'On your way to your homelands? I see. Where do you live?' Akila pawed the ground, shaking her mane as she thought about what this stallion had said. Was she going to tell him the truth? That she was born in the burnings, and so sees that as her homelands, or was she going to make something up? Each option had its dangers. Both as dangerous as eachother. "The burnings." She said uncertainly, unsure whether saying this was such a good idea.
'If you don't mind my asking, that is. I don't mean to pry.' The Vanner couldn't help but smile. He was polite. "Not at all." She said, lowering her head slightly, in another sign of respect.
She looked over at Seiren again, whom was staying quiet. She looked at her nose, which was still sore looking, with the wierd stick things stuck deeply in there.
(Sorry its short, my muse is gone.)

The two other horses just continued their conversation as Seiren stood between them, staring blankly into space and not saying anything. She hadn't thought about the pain involved in getting the quills out of her nose, she had only been thinking about how sore they were while they were in her nose. But it would probably be better just to take them out, they were gradually moving deeper into her flesh and hurt more as they did so. It was nice of the stallion to offer to take them out, even if she did have to ask first, but she did learn at least two things from this. One; never go near the spikey things and if they turn their back on you, run as fast as you can away from them. And two; make it absolutely clear that the spikes in your nose are not supposed to be there and that they hurt. A lot.
As both the horses turned once again to look at her nose, Seiren felt a little bit like a freak show. Maybe she should have just pretended that they were supposed to be there, and avoid this embarrassment altogether. But then, her nose would probably hurt for the rest of her life unless, of course, she could make her tongue grow enough so that it would be able to reach the quills and pull them out. Yes. That sounded like a good plan. Maybe she should, how hard could it be to make her tongue grow? Crossing her eyes again, Seiren focussed all her strength on growing her tongue. Unfortunately, all she managed was a sneeze. Time to turn back to the original plan.
Turning her head towards the stallion, Seiren widened her big brown eyes and looked up at him. "Yes please." she said pitifully, there was no other way this could be done. "B-but take them out gently." she stated nervously, not wanting it to hurt too much. "But quickly as well, so it doesn't hurt for too long." Then she squeezed her eyes shut and waited for the pain to be over with.
((yes, she is a stupid horse))
